Best Rapid Application Development Tool
The database definition is an integral part of the application so that changes automatically modify the database and flow to all programs that use that data. This saves an incredible amount of development time and avoids costly errors. We have used Magic eDeveloper to produce enterprise applications that have been proven reliable and virtually bullet proof. I became involved with Magic software about 15 years ago as the CFO/CIO of a very entrepreneurial soft drink manufacturing operation. We wrote all our integrated order processing, production scheduling and reporting, warehousing, traffic, billing and revenue reporting applications using Magic. The first point that I want to make is that there is no way that the complex applications that were programmed, which included advanced features and a high degree of artificial intelligence, could have done using any other software in the short time it took to complete. There is no rapid application development tool available today that we could have used to accomplish this task if it were available back then. The second point that I want to make is that we were able to accommodate almost all of our customers' unique requirements where our competition could not. We were able to rapidly respond to our customers' requests for changes where our competitors could not or could not do so for weeks and months or at all. The net result was an incredible increase in market share. eDeveloper is literally a strategic tool. Most software packages can be compared to a 747. They provide the same service to large numbers of people in an inflexible way. But sometimes what you really need is a helicopter that can perform a variety tasks. Magic provides that helicopter for servicing your customers' and your businesses unique needs. There are other rapid application development tools out there. Some are very good for developing quick, small applications. We use them ourselves. It is a matter of using the right tool for the job. But when applications start to grow and become more complex using the other tools becomes a real problem in a hurry. One last point about the benefits of Magic's incredible flexibility. Using eDeveloper produces better applications. I don't care how much pre planning you do or how smart or how experienced the project team might be, you will find opportunities to improve your application while it is being developed. Depending on the object oriented software you are using you can "FORGETTABOUTIT" because it is just too expensive to modify the work that is already in place. Changes are postponed in the interest of meeting the deadline and are often never implemented. This is not so with Magic. You can rapidly incorporate improvements during development. You can rapidly implement improvements that come to light after implementation. eDeveloper is the key to better and more efficient operations. So if it is so good, why don't more people use Magic? I think the primary reason is because they just don't believe that any software development tool can be that productive. If I hadn't seen it myself I probably wouldn't believe it either.
Another stumbling block is the cost and time of training staff in a new technology. But Magic is easy to learn once you can convince yourself to stop worrying about all the minutia you used to have to worry about using languages like .Net, C+ or VB. 95% of your time is spent trying to get your program to do what you want it do with the most commonly used languages and 5% is spent worrying about solving the business problem at hand. Getting the program to work becomes the goal instead of solving problems. The percentages are reversed when you use Magic. Another stumbling block is that using Magic eDeveloper substantially reduces the number of programmers required to support the business. Since CIO's are often compensated based upon the budgets they oversee they will not be prone to shrinking their staffs, their budgets, and ultimately their compensation. Lastly, where can I find Magic programmers? Magic programmers are available. They also tend to be zealots because once you have developed using eDeveloper using everything else is a major pain in an unmentionable area. Magic is so easy to use that I taught people with other professional backgrounds to use it which creates very productive and valuable developers.
