I have seen ads for Search Engine Optimization Firms that tell me they can handle my Search Engine Optimization needs for a few dollars a day. Why should I waste my time on Search Engine Optimization when I have more important work to do?

The first step in the Search Engine Optimization Process is Keyword Research and Analysis. Most Search Engine Optimization firms look for Keywords that are not highly competitive (not many web sites are competing for these Keywords) that do generate some amount of traffic or, if the client has a very high page value, try to go after highly competitive, very high traffic keywords. There are a thousand shades of gray in between but that is the gist of it. But the benefit Keyword Research and Analysis is much more than Search Engine Optimization.

Keyword Research and Analysis allows you to look into the minds of your existing customers and potential customers (See the Wordtracker Keyword Research Guide). Not only do you have the tools to determine precisely what your customer or potential customer is looking for but you can immediately gauge the available supply for that product or service by performing a competitive analysis of the keywords. When this dawns on people there will be thousands of people subscribing to Wordtracker that could care less about Search Engine Optimization and are instead simply conducting very inexpensive, targeted and accurate new product research. This is one of the most incredible benefits businesses can derive from the Internet.

When you hire a Search Engine Optimization company that come in with an extremely low bid you can bet that the person actually doing the work is not a seasoned professional. They may be supervised by a well seasoned professional (or not). But the supervisor is not doing the grunt work. But even with the best Keyword Analysis Tool like Wordtracker there is still a tremendous amount of time spent just thinking about the keywords that you find.

But it is a safe bet that the person getting paid 15 or 20 dollars an hour is not thinking about new products or services. They are focused upon trying to find keywords for your existing products or services and trying to stay within the confines of a strict budget. But not paying attention to all Keywords stumbled upon is like panning for gold dust and then throwing away chunks of gold because you were told to look for gold dust. And if you don't know what chunks of gold actually look like you wouldn't know them if you saw them.

Who is better to recognize these "chunks of gold" than the owner of the business or a person intimately familiar with the business. But if you absolutely do not have the time to do Keyword Research and Analysis yourself at least get a seasoned professional to do the analysis. Yes, it is more expensive. Doing it right is more expensive. But the potential payback is incredible.

Lastly, a lesson from my tree trimming service. When haggling over the price of trimming a tree, Rocky will eventually agree to just about any reasonable price. But you will get less service for a lesser price. Rocky is in business to make money. If you pay less you will get less. If there is a mandated budgetary constraint on the Keyword Research and Search Engine Optimization the 20th rank is good enough. But the difference between 20th place and placement in the top five is 10's or 100's of thousands of dollars in sales. Did you save any money? You be the judge.
