Is it better to submit web pages manually to search engines rather than use an automated process or service?

There are two parts to the question because there are two categories of automated search engine submission:

  1. Search Engine Submission Services
  2. Intelligent Automated Search Engine Submission Software

Search Engine Submission Services
Manually submitting web pages is superior to most submission services because there are rules for each search engine that many automated services ignore. There are limits to the number of pages that can be submitted at one time or within a 24 hour period. There are limits regarding how often pages are submitted.

Automated services often claim that they submit your web pages to thousands of search engines which you could not manage by manual submission. But there are only a few search engines that matter. The following table supplied by Wordtracker shows the percentage of total searches performed by each search engine and an overview of the relationships between the various search engines (% of total searches is current, relationship information as at January, 2004):

If you are indexed in the search engines above you are exposed to 88.9% of all searches performed on the Internet. The remaining search engines, numbering in the 100's or thousands, consume the remaining 11.2%. Being listed in the search engines not appearing in the above list will have little or no impact on you sales. Additional information regarding the relationships of search engines is available at:
One additional note about automated search engine submission services. Most automated search engine submission services do nothing to improve the quality of the pages they are submitting. A page that is not search engine friendly will not generate traffic no matter how many search engines that have indexed the page.

IIntelligent Search Engine Submission Software
Our specific experience is with WebPosition and we cannot address the quality of competing software. One of the many features offered in the WebPosition program is the intelligent submission of web page to the various search engines. By intelligent submission I am referring to the fact that the submissions adhere to the submission parameters set by each of the major search engines so you will never be penalized. The rules are monitored and updated by WebPosition and the software update whenever changes are put into effect by the search engines.

This type of automated submission is vastly superior to manual submission.

  1. All pages can be included at one time. The program then submits the pages to each search engine based upon the number of pages permitted to be submitted on a given day.
  2. The program pauses between the submission of each page emulating manual submission. The emulation of manual submission is not a deception. The pause is a courtesy in that the search engine's server is not being overloaded. The search engine itself could care less if the submission is being done manually or if it is automated.
  3. Failed submissions and pages not yet submitted to stay within submission guidelines can be automatically rescheduled for submission the next day until all pages are submitted. Manually submitting pages can lead to oversights and failure to submit certain pages at all.
Many if not most professional SEO firms use WebPosition to submit clients' pages to the search engines. Let the experts at WebPosition worry about changes in submission requirements for the different search engines.
